Thonga Beach Lodge

Stretching along the azure shores of the Maputuland coast in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal is Thonga Beach Lodge; with no development for over 60 miles up and down the beach, this sanctuary for marine life is unrivalled.

Set above a secluded bay, the thatched bush suites, some with a private pool, are nestled into the indigenous coastal dune forest and have sweeping beach views.The central lodge has a casual and relaxed atmosphere, inside dining, a bar and deck area, a separate swimming pool and a perfectly positioned beach deck with panoramic sea views.

Why we like Thonga Beach Lodge

The 220 km long reserve is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests. With 100 km of untouched shoreline around Lake Sibaya, see hippo and crocodile bask in and around the lakes and the reserve provides a haven for a variety of rare fish, flora and fauna.

Activities

Thonga offers a fully equipped PADI dive centre with turtle tracking and diving available (November to February). Explore the azure waters in a kayak or take to an open water guided experience – the ultimate adventure for modern day explorers to encounter whales, dolphins and turtles. Venture to Lake Sibaya for a sundowner and watch an iconic sunset over Southern Africa’s largest freshwater lake. Other activities on offer include birding, forest walks, cultural tours and fishing.

Sustainability

The founders and owners of Isibindi Africa Lodges, Brett and Paige Gehren, both come from a conservation background and have developed a collection of properties in some of South Africa’s incredible ecosystems. Conservation is a passion for Thonga Beach Lodge, who are actively involved in protecting the loggerhead and leatherback turtles found in the reefs right in front of the lodge.
