Komod Dragon, Komodo, Indonesia

Flores and Komodo

Flores is often the starting point for a journey aboard a traditional Indonesia sailing boat – a Phinisi and is interestingly almost entirely Roman Catholic in a majority Muslim country.

Flores is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands and is located east of Sumbawa and Komodo, generally used as a stopping off point to see the endangered dragons of Komodo and part of the Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A little more about Flores and Komodo

With active volcanoes and prehistoric dragons, the islands of the Komodo National Park are among the most rugged and hostile on the planet. But they also contain stunning tropical scenery, with lush jungle and aquamarine seas.

Explore the traditional island tribes of West Flores, and discover the unique wildlife of Rinca Island, including monkeys, wild boar and buffalo and, of course, Komodo dragons. A trip to the Gili Lawa Darat and Moyo Island offers incredible snorkelling and the chance for a beach barbecue on a genuine tropical island paradise. The pristine waters of the Flores sea are notably flat making it an attractive option to even the timidest of sailors.
