When visiting somewhere like the Maldives the devil is in the detail. Choosing where to stay in the Maldives is a bit of a minefield. What is it that sets one island resort apart from the rest?
How do you choose the one that is going to suit you? The islands clients choose really comes down to personal preference and the type of atmosphere they prefer, large with more facilities and possibly family-friendly or smaller and more intimate.
Our Maldives experts have dangled their toes in many hotel pools and are ideally placed to recommend the perfect resort for your requirements. There are few people who know more about the Maldives than they do or who can design a better Maldives holiday for you.
For those of you who do not want to think about paying a bill at the end of the holiday, there is a good choice of luxury inclusive options available.
We recommend Constance Moofushi for its incredibly high standard of all-inclusive dining options and its sublime house reef, popular with divers and families alike. There are plenty of activities available including a gym, deep-sea fishing, various water sports and Scuba diving.
Atmosphere Kanifushi Maldives offers a Platinum Plus which elevates the regular all-inclusive to a completely new level – offering sumptuous buffet and fine dining, an array of excursions and activities and premium wines and spirits. Fun-filled and hassle-free.
If you prefer to have a change of scene then split your time between two islands reached by a three, four- or seven-night cruise onboard the luxurious Four-Season Explorer, through the Baa Atoll. Sail between Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru, home to the Four Seasons Maldives Resort properties. With no more than 22 passengers, island hopping never looked so perfect. There is a daily diving or snorkelling schedule which gets you up close with manta rays, whale sharks and pods of dolphins and pilot whales.
Alternatively, for those preferring complete privacy, Soneva in Aqua can be chartered for a day, upwards to four days on the Tri-Atoll adventure. Complete with onboard private chef, yoga instructor and spa therapist indulge in pure understated luxury. Starting or finishing at the Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi resorts for the remainder of the holiday.
If this has repeatedly shown up year after year on your wishlist, what better place than the Maldives to learn. With warm calm waters, oceans teeming with fish, and possibly the best place on earth to dive, it is perfect for beginners. Explore the spectacular house reefs in the resort, that are often just metres from the beach, home of the exotic marine life; from stingrays and lionfish to snappers and eels. Kids can learn from the age of ten. Witness their excitement as they swim with mantas. A great hotel for eco-adventurers is Vakkaru Maldives. Famous for its manta rays, the diving here is exceptional.
If you want total peace and quiet and an island paradise experience but are concerned you might be too cut off, then Niyama offers the choice of two Maldivian Island experiences, “Play” and “Chill”. Discover your island niche and settle in or jump back and forth between high-energy indulgences and cool serenity. There are a collection of studios, suites and pavilions, dotted across both islands.

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is between November and April. February is considered high season due to both low rainfall and humidity. Diving conditions are generally good all year round. June in the Maldives is a great time for those who want to discover more marine life in this Indian Ocean paradise, as it is the beginning of the monsoon season, the huge increase in plankton draws in hundreds of whale sharks and manta rays to the region.
